Bill Shurtliff's story…
in his own words…

Bill pick.jpg

"I was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1947.

I’ve been told I was a happy kid. Raised in a typical middle class home during the 1950s, art was given little or no importance in my world. But, in 1960 in junior high school, I had a wonderful art teacher who helped me develop and value my love for art.

"As a boy, I was a Mad Magazine addict, copying and drawing as many of their cartoons and line drawings as I could! Always in love with art, I developed a small following with my cartoons while serving in the US Army in the late 1960s. I entered the University of Michigan School of Art after three years in the Army, graduating “cum laude” with a B.F.A. in 1976.

"By then I had a beautiful family to take care of, and I discovered there were no job recruiters waiting for me with a degree in fine art. However, after doing some pen and ink drawings of local scenes for a gallery, I not only got a lot of positive feedback, but I sold a few. That marked the beginning of my professional career as an artist.

"Since then I have created hundreds of pen and ink drawings as well as many oil paintings and sculptures. I’ve illustrated a number of books, produced art for publications and my card and calendar business as well as commissioned drawings of homes and businesses. I’ve been fortunate to have my work in many shows and galleries over the years.

"Looking back, I am very grateful for my love of art and any gifts that I’ve been given. Even now, sometimes when I’m painting or drawing, I feel like a happy kid!"

[Note: After a brief illness, Bill was born into eternal life in July 2023. However, over the years his work had become a family business, and we will continue his beautiful legacy.]
